805 River Cabin moved into the valley from 805 Main Street, Coon Rapids, many years ago. This rusic retreat sits between a spring-fed pond and the Middle Raccoon River in a beautiful, yet secluded valley teeming with wildlife. Deer, wild turkey, coyote, beaver, and songbirds fill the surrounding woods and nearby clearing. The property includes an old-fashioned outhouse and a warm weather shower house. No electricity. Bring your fishing poles to catch dinner in the backyard pond or the river. A picnic table, fire ring, and clothes line are provided.
The 3-season cabin includes a small bedroom (with queen and twin), a living/sitting room (with twin), an upstairs loft (with queen) and a small kitchen. Two queen and two twin foam mattresses on platform beds are provided, you must supply the linens or bring sleeping bags. Screen windows are covered with shutters and a wood-burning stove can make this house cozy except in the coldest months of the year. A small table, chairs and a lantern are provided.
For the safety of the surrounding woodlands, please do not bring your own firewood. Locally- harvested firewood is available on site for a minimal fee.
Dogs
are welcome at 805 River Cabin. Horses can also be kept at the cabin either in one of the two pens, on the tie line or by closing the gate and allowing them to roam within the small fenced in area surrounding the cabin. Frequently, trailers and heavy rigs must be kept at the top of the ridge line (1/2 mile from cabin), depending on conditions of the trail. Absolutely NO ATVs allowed.
The Main Campground, situated in the heart of Whiterock Valley, is directly across the road from the River House and is a great access point for the main hiking trail through Whiterock. The campground sits along a bend in the Raccoon River, amidst gorgeous sandstone outcroppings and our resident cliff swallow colony. This particular bluff, from which Whiterock Conservancy derives it's name, is the largest vertical outcrop of Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone in the Midwest. Several excellent fishing ponds and a nearby abandoned log cabin are also within easy hiking distance.
The campground is very accessible for campers, RVs and horse trailers, although no electric or water hookups are provided. It is a large, flat pasture with a sand base and covered with grass. Several trees provide shade at each of the six camping sites in this campground. Each site is equipped with picnic table and fire ring. For the safety of the surrounding woodlands, please do not bring your own firewood. It is available on site for a minimal fee.
Several horse tie lines are provided, along with a manure pit and wheelbarrow. Several steel pens are provided (additional fee) and reservations for pens are required. The campground area shares a dumpster, port-a-potties, and shower house. Potable water is available from the shower house. The very nearby River House yard offers an additional old fashioned, double-seater outhouse, a year-round hydrant for potable water, a volleyball court, a horseshoe court and a three-story barn in which to play on rainy days.
For real privacy on the edge of a gorgeous woodland, consider our Turkey Ridge Campsites. On three separate ridgelines, each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring and firewood. The three campsites share a port-a-potty. The shower house, a water hydrant and a dumpster are available at the River House/Main Campground complex, about 1 mile away. The campsites lie about 1/2 mile off the nearest gravel road, on a sandy flat trail, and are accessible by vehicles.
